As we enter the 5G era, strategic telcos are digitizing their infrastructures to not only handle the explosion of data requirements, but to also take advantage of the new business opportunities and revenue streams that will come about with the advent of 5G.
Recently we held a webinar entitled “Data Strategies for 5G: A Closer Look at BSS Digital Transformation.” We had a number of excellent questions during that session, including some that we did not have the time to answer during the webinar. These questions are reproduced and answered below. For those who missed the webinar, you may view it on demand.
Editor’s Note: Unless otherwise noted, the question is coming from a webinar attendee via our chat functionality during the session. Answers were provided by Volt Active Data’s Dheeraj Remella. These answers have been edited for clarity and grammar.
Q: How can I use data to provide better service for my subscribers?
A: One of the things that we work on with companies is targeted campaign management for subscribers. While not common in Western Europe and North America, in areas where prepaid call programs are still prevalent, this is something that our partners are doing. They are harvesting data right after the call, then make intelligent decisions based on how the subscribers experience was. For example, if the subscriber is about to run out of minutes, you could offer them more minutes right there and then. Another use is network quality of service assurance. CSPs can collect subscriber’s CDRs and make adjustments on the fly to provide better quality service.
Q: With 5G, there’s a focus on unifying data into a single unified data function. How does this affect my microservice architecture?
A: In a microservices architecture, by being able to take data out of the containerization framework, you’re able to set up an independently scalable data framework. It gives you consistency satisfaction across the virtualization elements. Your microservice itself has to be thought as stateless, where you keep state information in this data framework.
