The Smart Meter Management Challenge
There’s no point deploying millions of smart meters over a huge geographic area if you can’t communicate with them or control their access. While this might seem simple, in the real world it can be incredibly complicated. Common challenges include translating messages across different APIs; complicated ownership and access scenarios; authentication; and correlating requests sent downstream to responses coming upstream. You may also need to manage patching and security lifecycles.
Volt for Smart Meter Management — A Real-World Example
A major European country uses Volt for its national smart meter program. The program allows users to switch energy companies at any time without a ‘truck roll’ or physical meter reading. Volt is responsible for authentication, access control, audit trail generation, message translation, upstream and downstream message management, as well as emergency command routing. The system consists of two three-node Volt clusters that use Active(N) for intercommunication.
